Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams:
Dealing With Deckbuilding

By:WiCkEd

August 22, 2005

       Hey hey...WiCkEd is back with his second installment this week. So, I hope you enjoyed the last article, I found it decent myself, then again, most of the time a writer after he reads his writing doesn't like it. That's how the worlds works. On a happier note, welcome to the staff BenTheGreat, YamiBakuraFan, and Leon-D, all of which are residents here and on Obelisk Blue, like myself, on Obelisk Blue I'm Necrophiliac Chicken. Yep, thats my name...loooooong story.

            So, this article is dealing with theme of decks. Its geared towards the unexperienced deck builder and the unsure deckbuilder. For veterans you may learn a thing or two from me, if you don't. Don't say I didn't tell you so. I'm going to turn on some Hot Hot Heat and go from there. Alright! Onto the first section.

SECTION ONE: Choosing Deck Theme And the Unexperienced Build

            So let's say my name is Carlos O' Hara, and I'm a newbie when it comes to deck building. I want to build a casual Dragon deck. But as you know, Dragons can go in many variations; from Red-Eyes Black Dragon to Blue-Eyes White Dragon, or Horus The Black Flame Dragon to Armed Dragon LV7. So, those are the 4 main variations. Now let me show you the common build I get for Dragon decks.

2 x Blue-Eyes White Dragon

2 x Red-Eyes Black Dragon

2 x Armed Dragon LV5

1 x Horus the Black Flame Dragon Lv6

3 x Masked Dragon

1 x Twin-Headed Behemoth

3 x Armed Dragon LV3

1 x Red-Eyes Black Chick

1 x Cyber Jar

1 x Horus's Servant

2 x Giant Soldier of Stone

3 x Gemini Elf

1 x Pot of Greed

1 x Graceful Charity

2 x Stamping Destruction

3 x Level Up!

2 x Graveyard in the Fourth Dimension

2 x Creature Swap

1  x Snatch Steal

1 x Dragon's Gunfire

 2 x Dragon's Rage

 2  x Curse of Anubis

2 x Waboku

1 x Torrential Tribute

1 x Threatening Roar

TOTAL: 43

            So basically, that's the unexperienced build of a Dragon deck that I get most of the time. You can obviously tell the root is the REBD Structure deck. I'm also going to tell you that deck inspires a very bad idea for Dragon decks. Well, in anycase, let's say Carlos like his Red-Eyes Black Dragon more than he likes Horus, Armed Dragon, and Blue-Eyes all together, so he goes that route with his deck.

SECTION TWO: Exploiting the Deck's Ins and Outs

            Carlos knows that Dragon monsters often require a large tribute of usually 2 or more monsters to summon. Carlos does and does not like this. Why does Carlos like it you might ask? Well he found a card in his collection called Metamorphosis that was widely popular at his local tournament. Well, Carlos has been researching cards lately on Pojo.com and Metagame.com to see what is and isn't worth playing. Well, he found out that to take advantage of REBD's Level 7 he could Metamorphosize it into King Dragun allowing easy access to Dragons in his hand. He also realizes Red-Eyes Black Chick is a Level 1, meaning it can Metamorphosize into Thousand Eyes-Restrict, Carlos begins to catch on that most cards in his Red-Eyes Black Dragon are Morphable, so he decides to make the focus of his deck Red-Eyes Black Dragon Morph.

            This opens up more options for the deck. Instead of it being a purebred Dragon beatdown. This gives it a more controlling, self sufficient purpose. With Dragons at such high levels, Red-Eyes could Morph into King Dragun whilst Blue-Eyes would Morph into Gatling Dragon. Red-Eyes Black Chick to Thousand-Eyes Restrict, while Twin-Headed Behemoth could change into Dragoness the Wicked Knight.

            What else do Dragons have going for them? Well, they're obviously solid stat wise, but other than that, they aren't too different nor do most of their effects have a decent advantage. But its fine. We can work with this.

SECTION THREE: THE REVISED BUILD

            So Carlos has been doing his research lately and has desided to make his new build. He's decided it will be fairly competitive and it will harness various elements. So, onto the build.

2 x Red-Eyes Black Dragon

1 x Airknight Parshath

1 x Tribe-Infecting Virus

1 x Sangan

2 x The Dark-Hex-Sealed Fusion

2 x Mystic Tomato

1 x Morphing Jar

2 x Spear Dragon

2 x Red-Eyes Black Chick

1 x Sinister Serpent

1 x D.D. Warrior Lady

1 x Tsukuyomi

1 x Magician of Faith

1 x Pot of Greed

1 x Graceful Charity

1 x Delinquent Duo

2 x Scapegoat

2 x Metamorphosis

1 x Mystical Space Typhoon

1 x Heavy Storm

1 x Lightning Vortex

1 x Snatch Steal

2 x Book of Moon

1 x Enemy Controller

2 x Nobleman of Crossout

1 x Ring of Destruction

1 x Mirror Force

1 x Torrential Tribute

1 x Call of the Haunted

2 x Dust Tornado

Fusion Deck:

3 x Dark Balter

3 x King Dragun

3 x Karbonala Warrior

3 x  Thousand-Eyes Restrict

so on and so forth...

TOTAL: 40 CARDS

            That was the most accurate build for the concept Carlos had. Why Carlos even exists is beyond me, I've realized I could have just used myself...oh well! Point being, after research, finding new cards in a collection, and looking at all elements of your deck, you can make it into anything. Remember this: Originality has its perks, as do mainstream decks, do NOT discriminate against either mainstream nor original deck. So, this article is at its end. For you Veterans I've devised a set of slang terms that my friends and I have used for deckbuilding. For you newbies, I hope you enjoyed this, and have learned from it.

KEY:

Vanilla = Normal Monster

Rotten Orange = Crappy Effect Monster

Non-Ripe Orange = Decent Effect Monster

Orange = Good Effect Monster

Blueberry = Ritual Monster

Rotten Grape = Bad Fusion Monster

Grape = Good Fusion Monster

Raspberry = Trap

Buggy Raspberry = Crappy Trap

CREATED BY: WiCkEd and Friends

NOTE: For Magic/Spell we don't have anything yet. Also, as obscure as this key sounds, it makes things kind of funny when you're building a deck and you're spouting off fruits and a parent walks in and asks whats going on. Fun stuff. Enjoi.
