Thoughts on the Ban-List Part 2: How do Zombies shape up?
03.01.05

Last time I gave my preliminary thoughts on how the new meta is going to be shaping out. Today I'm going to add on to that and go a bit more in-depth:

Adding onto the dominance of Zombies in the meta, here are some other cards that very nicely combat Zombies and hold their own against other decks:

Zombies vs. Warriors

With D.D. Warrior Lady gone, one of the major anti-Zombie cards left decks. But what's to prevent the use of D.D. Assailant? Assailant usage can completely shut down Vampire Lord.

You get:

1 Sangan
2 Reinforcement of the Army
3 D.D. Assailant
1 D.D. Warrior Lady
0-3 Warrior Returning Alive
1 Premature Burial
1 Call of the Haunted
0-2 Return from a Different Dimension

To use against:

1 Sangan
0-2 Giant Rat
3 Pyramid Turtle
2 Vampire Lord

Who wins?

3 ways to search out D.D. Assailant and D.D. Warrior Lady, 4 D.D. Assailants/Warrior Ladies, and up to 5 ways to possibly re-use them if they are stopped initially, as well as up to 2 ways to bring them back even AFTER they've been used.

Zombies, while they have 4-6 ways to get out V-lord, only actually have 2 V-lords to use. And once V-lord gets removed from play by an Assailant/DDWL, it ain't coming back (unless your opponent is crazy enough to run their own Return from a Different Dimensions).

In addition, Command Knights can oftentimes make your warriors big enough to actually kill V-Lord in battle, and Pyramid Turtles are going to have a lot of trouble suiciding into Don Zaluugs. Blade Knights can just flat-out kamikaze V-lord even WITHOUT Command Knight (assuming your hand size is low).

In addition, the continual field presence that all good warrior decks have makes it unlikely

Zombies DO have some weapons against Warriors though, as well.

Spirit Reapers provide some nasty stall, and without 3 D.D. Warrior Ladies, Warriors could have some trouble dealing with them.

Ryu Kokki, as well, can wreak havoc against a field of warriors, and there's always the sideboarded Kinetic Soldiers that you can bring in (even more deadly by their Giant Rat searchability).

However, these are just a few strengths, and Warriors can stop Ryu Kokki and Spirit Reaper with removal (notably Exiled Force).

Kinetic Soldiers could prove more of a problem. However, Raigeki Break and Sakuretsu Armor ought to be able to take them on.

So it looks like Warriors STILL win out over Zombies.

Zombies vs. Chaos

Can chaos still win out after the bans?

Let's take a look at what each side has to offer:

Searchability:

Zombies:

Pyramid Turtle
Sangan
Mystic Tomato
Giant Rat (?)

Chaos:

Sangan
Mystic Tomato
Apprentice Magician (?)

Zombies have more searching power.

Recursion:

Zombies:

Book of Life
Call of the Haunted
Premature Burial

Chaos:

Call of the Haunted
Premature Burial

Again, Zombies win out.

Trump Cards:

Zombies:

Vampire Lord (x2)

Chaos:

Black Luster Soldier ~ Envoy of the Beginning
Chaos Sorcerer

Zombies still win out, as V-lord is gotten out much more easily.

Conclusion? Chaos can no longer stand alone. It needs to be coupled with other archetypes, such as Morph.

Speaking of which,

Zombies vs. Morph

Who wins here?

I really have to say that Morph does, because it really just gets around everything that Zombies would try to do.

Vampire Lord?
Say hello to Creature Swap and Metamorphosis.
And Black Luster Soldier.

Creature Swap?
Chained Scapegoats wrecks their plans, and chained Enemy Controllers and Compulsory Evacuation Devices are pretty painful too.

Spirit Reaper?
Enemy Controller.

Pyramid Turtle?
Okay, this guy will actually go through, but all it gets are V-lord and Reaper, both of which are easily dealt with.
Plus, Old Vindictives (if you have the guts to run them) have lots of fun with these guys.

Speed issues?
The dual searching power of Apprentice Magician and Mystic Tomato, plus Magical Merchant and Magician of Faith, let Morph keep up with Zombies.

Card Advantage?
Zombies don't exactly get that much Card Advantage, except with Creature Swap and (potentially) Spirit Reaper and Vampire Lord. None of those cards are particularly effective against Morph.

Trump Cards?

Zombies:

V-lord (x2) + support

Morph:

Morph (x3)
Black Luster Soldier
(potentially) Chaos Sorcerer

Morph continues to lead the game.

Conclusion? Morph > Zombie.

Overall Conclusion?

If you're planning on running Zombies (as most people will), be prepared for Warriors and Morph.
