We got our hands on a couple pieces of artwork from the upcoming Zendikar release. I met with some of great folks from WOTC at GenCon. They said that Zendikar will introduce more new Vampires, and also introduce a new race of Vampires that have some Native American Indian flavors to them. One of the new vampire is depicted in one of the images below. Click on the images for larger pictures.
I was lucky enough to participate in a private (invite only) Planechase demo while at GenCon. There were 4 of us playing in a multiplayer game, and we were each playing one of the four new decks. (Elemental Thunder, Metallic Dreams, Strike Force, and Zombie Empire). I was playing the Zombie Empire deck which was basically a monoblack zombie deck. Each deck comes with 10 large Planechase plane cards. (None of the 4 decks had copies of the plane cards, so there were 40 plane cards in the game). The person going first puts a plane card in play, and this plane effects all players on the field. For anyone who's played Pokemon, these play a lot like the gyms in in Pokemon ... except you need a good roll of the dice to change planes. Planes rarely stay in play very long. As on your turn you can roll to change the plane (1/6 of a chances to change the plane). Your first chance to change the plane is free and can be done any time during your turn. Also on your turn you can pay mana try to change the planes as well (1 mana for a 2nd try, 2 more mana for a 3rd try, etc ...). During a creature stalemate, there's a lot of mana to be used to change planes. I found Planechase a fun and unique way to play Magic. It adds a new flavor to mulitplayer match. Tuesday, January 6, 2009 For the fun of it, we've been counting down the Top 10 M:TG cards of 2008 in our Card of the Day section. Morningtide, Shadowmoor, Eventide & Shards of Alara were released in 2008, and our reviewers each submitted their own Top 10 lists from those cards. We weighed and averaged them to get an overall Top 10 list for 2008. We're counting them down over the next 2 weeks. We continue today with #9: Cruel Ultimatum.
