Armades, Keeper of Boundaries comes in at #7 on our
list, another Synchro Monster. We have a Level 5
Synchro, and a Light attributed, Fiend type Monster,
with 2300 attack and 1500 defense. First off, Light
and Fiend, although odd together, and both
incredibly well supported. Armades is Synchro
Summoned with one Tuner and one or more non-Tuner
Monsters. 2300 attack isn't bad for a Level 5
Synchro, but it's at least 100 points lower than I'd
like. But what he lacks in overall power, he makes
up for with his effect. When attacked, or
attacking, Armades prevents your opponent from
activating cards or effects, until the end of the
Damage Step. That must be where the whole 2300
attack thing comes into play...leaving him with a
vulnerability of sorts. He's still an amazing
Monster, and could quickly prove annoying if he
stays on the Field for long.
Ratings:
Traditional: 2.75/5 Honestly, he's not bad here
either.
Advanced: 4.25/5
Art: 5/5 Best picture in Judgement of the Light,
period, and this set has some kickass artwork

The Judgment of Light booster set is the first
set sense Xyz monsters came out to revitalize
synchro monsters. One such synchro monster is
Armades, Keeper of Boundaries. It does not have the
beast attack with 2300, but for a level 5 monster it
is pretty good. When you throw in its awesome
effect, Armades becomes a very good monster.
The effect that prohibits your opponent from
activating cards or effects when Armades, Keeper of
Boundaries attacks or is attacked is pretty darn
good. That means that cards like Mirror Force,
Catastor, D.D. Warrior Lady, Ryko, Gorz, Forbidden
Lance, Sangon, Mystic Tomato, Honest, and the list
goes on and on can not be activated by your
opponent. Notice that I said opponent. You can still
activate cards and effects. Sense Amades is a Light
monster, you can still drop Honest, and you can
still play cards like Forbidden Lance while your
opponent can not negate their activations.
Amades, Keeper of Boundaries can be played in any
deck that can make a level 5 monster. Its Light
attribute makes it good in a Chaos deck, the Fiend
Type makes it even stronger in a Dark World deck,
and its generic summoning requirement makes it good
in just about any other deck as most decks play
Effect Veiler and a level 4 monster. Amades is one
of those tool box synchros that you want to use in
the right situation as 2300 attack without any
attack bonuses is not going to survive many battles.

Alright! I’m back from a long break and ready to
look at some Yugioh cards. Today we are
continuing the Top 10 Judgment of Light List with #7
on our list. It’s a level 5 Synchro monster that
actually has a really good effect and is pretty easy
to summon. So here it is!
Armades, Keeper of Boundaries
Attribute: Light
Types: Fiend/Synchro/Effect
Level 5
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card attacks or is attacked, your opponent
cannot activate cards or effects until the end of
the Damage Step.
ATK/2300
DEF/1500
At first glance this card may not seem that great.
It has decent stats for a level 5 monster but the
best part about this monster is its effect.
When this card attacks, it can stop any effects that
activate in the damage step like Gorz, the Emissary
of Darkness, Honest, and even recruiter monsters.
It also stops your opponent from activating spell
and trap cards when Armades attacks. It can
also stop flip effect monsters from activating their
effects when attacked. It isn’t too bad of a
card even though Catastor seems like a better level
5 Synchro than this card. It would have been
nice if this card had 2600 attack like its other Xyz
counterparts, Tiras and Adreus. That would’ve
made this card amazing but it is still a great card
to consider using in any deck that summons level 5
Synchro monsters often.

My apologies for the lack of COTD Reviews for
over 2 weeks however dealing with my new job and
other responsibilities has taken a lot of time away
and my contributions have suffered.
With that said, I'm ready to get myself back into
the swing of things and today's Card of the Day is
one of my personal favorites from the Judgment of
the Light booser set: Armades, Keeper of Boundaries.
This Secret Rare Synchro monster has a simple but
lethal effect that will have competitive value for
years to come. Basically, whenever it attacks or is
attacked, everything else that happens between that
and the end of damage calculation is completely
wiped out for your opponent. This is very useful for
multiple reasons.
For example, it basically owns Forbidden Lance, one
of the most played cards used in the September 2012
format, which can see the same amount of play during
the September 2013 format. In order to use Forbidden
Lance against Armades, you have to activate it
before it attacks and, even then, all it does is
stop Armades from attacking your monster while
weakened. It stop cold cards like Prideful Roar,
Dimensional Prison, Mirror Force, almost all of the
Fire Formation trap cards, and so many others.
Remember, this effect only applies to your opponent.
You, however, is free to use your own copies so if
you have a Forbidden Lance in hand, you can attack
and then use Forbidden Lance afterwards. Also, in
that scenario, your opponent can't even use their
Counter Trap cards against you since Armades has
locked them down during that period, which makes any
card you activate while under Armades's effect
uncounterable.
Lastly, it stops any monsters that is typically
Special Summoned during damage calculation, like
Gorz and Tragoedia, so if you fear those 2
appearing, Armades will make sure they don't appear.
It even stops hand traps like Honest, Blackwing -
Kalut, and various other cards. It even shuts down
Flip Effects like Ryko so it has a lot of unknown
potential.
It has a solid 2300 ATK and since when it battles,
effects is turned off, it is a clear counter to Ally
of Justice Catastor, one of the best, if not the
best, Level 5 Synchro monster currently available in
the game.
Overall, this is definitely one of the best Level 5
Synchro monsters we have in the game right now,
capable of beating around a lot of commonly played
cards. It is definitely worth picking one up as a
competitive player.
Traditional Format: 2/5 (I'm not going to lie, while
it is underpowered there, it has value there
nonetheless. That effect is quite strong and you can
do some nasty things with it.
Advanced Format: 4/5 (It has been a while since we
had a Synchro monster with an better than average
effect. This is definitely worth picking up and
keeping aside at all times. It's THAT good.)

Armades, Keeper of Boundaries
LIGHT/Fiend/Synchro/Effect/Level 5/2300/1500
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card attacks or is attacked, your opponent
cannot activate cards or effects until the end of
the Damage Step.
At Number 7 at the top 10 cards from Judgement of
the Light, is Armades, Keeper of Boundaries, another
new Synchro Monster. Armades is a LIGHT/Fiend though
it looks more like an angry fairy but still, it is a
level 5 generic synchro monster with 2300 ATK and
1500 DEF which is very good for a level 5.
Of course its main party piece is its effect. Simply
put when this battles your opponent cannot activate
any card effects until the end of the damage step.
So no Honest, Mirror Force, Battle Fader, Mystic
Tomato, etc., and what is even better is that
you can still activate your card effects, so if the
opponent does attack this card, you can use your
Mirror Forces and Magic Cylinders to protect it.
Overall a simple but very dangerous card and the
fact it is generic makes it splashable. Definitely
one to consider if you have the room in your extra
deck.

In our age of the Xyz, the Judgment of the Light
Booster Pack has given a revival to the Tuner/Synchro
mechanic, and I would say it’s new-and-improved.
After all, five of the eight new Synchros are on our
Top 10. I particularly like Armades as a sturdy
Level 5 Synchro with a disruptive effect, and it’s a
good Judgment of the Light card, but if you’re
asking how JOTL impacts the current game as a whole,
I wouldn’t really call it a game-changing card.
Regardless, I will tell you right away: In any Deck,
if you are going to run any generic Level 5 Synchro,
there should be very little reason why that monster
should not be Catastor unless you have a specialized
purpose. Other than that first copy, if you have
room for more Level 5, you most likely should be
choosing between Armades, Librarian, and Android.
Assuming that Type and Attribute are not factors,
you’ll probably want to go with Armades.
The most popular Level 5 Synchros are Ally of
Justice Catastor, T.G. Hyper Librarian, Magical
Android, and Junk Warrior. Catastor is the best one,
and even though it has the least ATK of them all,
everyone loves/hates it because of its highly
destructive effect. Librarian and Android both have
the highest ATK for any Level 5 Synchro (2400); one
is a Dark Spellcaster that helps give extra draws
when something special happens, and the other is a
Light Psychic that gives you at least 600 LP per
turn. Junk Warrior is used almost exclusively
because he makes a nice combo with Level Eater +
Quickdraw Synchron and there’s no other Level 5
Synchro that Quickdraw can do. Compared to all of
these, Armadeus seems to sit in the middle: Same ATK
with Junk Warrior and sits in the middle of Catastor
and Librarian/Android.
You know how over the years, you may have seen
monsters with effects like “Negate the effects of
the monsters this card destroys by battle” or
“Negate the Flip Effects of monsters this card
destroys by battle” or almost all Ancient Gears that
cannot have Traps responding to their attacks.
Armades is better than all of that combined. So
basically, when Armades is attacking, he completely
locks down all other effects, and your opponent
cannot use in-battle effects to help take him out.
When you attack, you can be guaranteed the attack
will go through, locking down Traps such as
Dimensional Prison or Mirror Force (which already
see lessened play), and when THEY attack YOU, you
are allowed to activate your own Traps and you don’t
have to worry that they’ll get negated.. It doesn’t
even have to be a Trap Card, just a generic trap,
such as Honest, Gorz the Emissary of Darkness, and
Tragoedia. Any monster that says “when this card is
destroyed” or any Flip effect won’t be able to
trigger so long as Armades is out. Cyber Valley is a
popular monster to end a Battle Phase and to draw a
free card; Armades turns that into 2300 points of
roadkill. Armades is capable of slaying an enemy
Catastor (although Librarian can do that too) and is
one of the few monsters that can effectively whittle
down a Battlin’ Boxer Lead Yoke single-handedly. As
you can see from my examples, Armades’ effect is
handy and reliable, and the only real complaint I
have of him is his low stats. Maestroke can easily
poke through him at his meagre 1500 DEF, while
Librarian would be able to survive. Armades’ own ATK
is outclassed by those of Librarian’s and Android’s,
so consequently those two may see higher play just
to beat Armades in battle.
Ruling Clarification: Armades cannot negate
continuous effects because they do not technically
“activate.” Effects that “activate” usually have a
colon, such as “When this happens: This effect.”
There has been a rise in Xyz Monsters that have the
effect “If this face-up card would be destroyed, you
can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card instead.”
This are continuous effects and they can survive an
attack from Armades.
Trad: 1/5 (Synchro isn’t important, effects that
activate in the Battle Phase and those that negate
said effects are even less important)
Adv: 3.5/5
Aesthetics: 4/5 Heh, the way he carries ice and fire
in his hand reminds me of the art of Chaos Sorcerer.
Plus, his cloak with leaf-like holes makes him look
rather ghostly. Anyway, I'm sure you're familiar
with the two other "Keeper of" monsters, Adreus,
Keeper of Boundaries and Tiras, Keeper of Genesis.
They're two of the most popular Rank 5 monsters.
Tiras, a Light Fairy, represents life and the start
of civilization and has a protection/destruction
effect; Adreus, a Dark Fiend, is the end, and has a
destruction effect. This especially makes sense
since Xyz Monsters are supposed to be made of
interdimensional antimatter, zooming through space.
Armades, the Level 5 Light Fiend Synchro with a
protection effect, would have to be everything in
between, specifically the Middle Ages (or maybe
another dimension altogether), as its art on the
Black and White Wave card shows him with a green
forest in front of a castle (it also shows his feet
and that he has no right wing). On his own card, you
can also see how he has an aurora under his right
arm. Auroras, a display of light when solar winds
resonate with magnetic poles. Auroras tend to be
linked with godly interaction, so it’s kinda fitting
that Armades is the “Keeper of Boundaries.” It’s the
Keeper of Illusions in Japanese, which also fits in
with the Light thing. I also think the “des” part in
his name is cute, but just because they use the word
“des” a lot to replace “death” when translating
cards from English. Other than being Level 5 though,
it really doesn’t have much in common with the other
Keepers, especially not sharing their 2600/1700
score (although Armades might be broken with those
scores).
Philosophy Corner: Don't breed 'em if you can't feed
'em.

Hey Guys today we're going to be doing Armedes,
Keeper of Boundaries..
a wonderful card of a growing pool of good Lv5
Synchros. Her effect prevents your opponent's card
effects from activating until the end of the damage
step is amazing, but something that people look over
is it doesn't matter if she's attacking or being
attacked meaning during that time your cards cannot
be negated! Lance, Honest, and even Forbidden Dress
are perfect fits for this card because your
defenses/offense cannot be thwarted when she's on
about to battle.
Overall and amazing card.

Well, we had a really long break; I actually
submitted yesterday’s review for
Yamato a week ago. Anyway, we now continue our
Top 10 Judgment of the Light Countdown with #7,
Armades, Keeper of Boundaries:
Level 5
LIGHT
Fiend / Synchro / Effect
2300 ATK / 1500 DEF
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
If this card attacks or is attacked, your opponent
cannot activate cards or effects until the end of
the Damage Step.
If you couldn’t tell, this guy is meant to be a
Synchro counterpart to the Xyz Monsters Tiras,
Keeper of Genesis and Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon.
He’s a Level 5 Synchro, which is nice because good
ones of those have always been kind of scarce
(similarly to Level 6). These days all you see is
Ally of Justice Catastor and the occasional T.G.
Hyper Librarian.
Now then, let’s look at his stats. LIGHT is always a
great Attribute to have, and Fiend-Type isn’t too
shabby. 2300 ATK is a little low, unfortunately, but
where he really shines is his effect.
“If this card attacks or is attacked, your opponent
cannot activate cards or effects until the end of
the Damage Step.”
Your opponent has absolutely no line of defense if
this guy is coming for them. Dimensional Prison and
Mirror Force both fail. Not even cards like Honest
or Bujingi Crane (a card that supports yesterday’s
card) work against him. If your opponent goes on the
offense, they’ll have to preemptively use the card
they want on Armades. This removes the surprise
factor and a lot of the power from cards like
Forbidden Lance, which you normally would hold onto
until the Damage Step. Be wary though, because
Armades still falls to cards like Bottomless and
Torrential, and can fall prey to a Mirror Force if
he is not the monster attacking.
The only thing really holding Armades back is the
fact that he’s competing with Ally of Justice
Catastor for a spot in the Extra; with a Catastor
reprint at the end of this month, there’s really no
reason to run Armades over him.
Catastor is ultimately the superior card, but if you
have room for 2 Level 5 Synchros then Armades is by
all means the next best choice.
Traditional: 3/5
Advanced: 4/5
Art: 4/5 (Looks pretty awesome, but I find it
interesting that he’s controlling fire and ice, yet
is LIGHT)
Tomorrow: I hate sports.
