Monday - Suijin, Sanga of the Thunder & Kazejin

Another week closer to Magic Ruler...

If you haven't noticed, today we will be rating all the Gate Guardian "parts" together, because they are so identical to each other.

All the "parts" have an effect that reads: Reduce the ATK of an opponent's monster attacking this card to 0. This effect can be used only once. The card's owner chooses when to activate this effect.

To get a little more specific... they are all level 7 with the following ATK/DEF: Kazejin 2400/2200, Sanga of the Thunder 2600/2200, and Suijin 2500/2400.

Of course we all know that these three "parts" are needed to summon Gate Guardian. So far in Duel Monsters, Gate Guardian is THE most impossible monster to bring into play. Check out the review on Gate Guardian for more of that.

But besides that, the "parts" are pretty bad. Two tribute for only a 2400-2600 ATK without an amazing effect isn't something to be happy about.

The effect is basically a weaker version of Waboku. Nothing spectacular.

Average Rating of the Three: 1.9/5

Today we're doing something truly unique.  We're reviewing three cards in one review!  Of course, these cards are so much alike, it makes sense.  Today's cards are Suijin, Sanga of the Thunder and Kazejin.

Card Text:
Suijin: Water/Aqua/7/2500/2400
Sanga of the Thunder: Light/Thunder/7/2600/2200
Kazejin: Wind/Spellcaster/7/2400/2200
Effect (all three): Reduce the ATK of an opponent's monster attacking this card to 0. This effect can be used only once. The card's owner chooses when to activate this effect.

Analysis:
As you know, these are the components to the Gate Guardian, the most difficult monster to summon in the game.  For Level 7 effect monsters, their stats are somewhat reasonable (although slightly underpowering).  Their effect more than makes up for it, however.

Before we continue, I would like to tell you that the effect up there is 100% true.  Yes, you heard me.  They actually reduce an attacking monster's attack power to 0.  This is unlike Waboku and Kuriboh, which only negate battle and LP damage, respectively.

Now, class, what happens if you attack one of these monsters and they use the effect?  What would happen if a 2400/2500/2600 attack monster was hit by a 0 attack monster?  Basically a direct damage hit for the GG part?  Very good.

These three cards are actually fairly good stall cards, and can stay out on the field for a long period of time.  If a threatening monster comes up and decides to attack it, just activate the effect.  Poof, no more threat ^_^.  You have to save the effect for just the right moment, however, as it can only be used once unless it leaves play, then reenters.  Monster Reborn anyone?

Sanga of the Thunder is probably the best of the three, as it has 2600 attack power, so it can outright beat a Summoned Skull.  It may make good tech in a deck.

Suijin is an interesting choice if you go for a Shield & Sword deck.  Nothing more than tech, however.  2400 defense is the highest of the three parts.

Kazejin would fit in with a F/S deck with a lot of powerups, but only as tech, of course.

Of course, their effect isn't retained when they are sacrificed for Gate Guardian, unlike in the anime.  Poor GG =(

Also unlike the anime, the effect won't help them against monster removal cards (like Mirror Force >_>), so feel free to hit them with a Tribute to the Doomed, Raigeki, or Man-Eater Bug.  These guys are actually fairly low on the counter charts, as their effect can wipe out an attacking Blue-Eyes White Dragon or anyone else foolish enough to attack them.  These guys are basically indestructible via battle damage until they use their effect.

Should YOU play them?
If you are playing a Gate Guardian deck, I would run 2 of each and 2 GG, although playing a Gate Guardian deck is suicide.  Otherwise, you can tech 1 into a deck if you think it will help the deck.  Personally, I would go with Barrel Dragon over one of these guys, but Sanga of the Thunder might make it into a Light deck if I build one in Magic Ruler...

Score:
I will give these guys an average score of 3.2 because they can do stuff, and that stuff can make your opponent very angry.

Well, here's something interesting.  These guys seem really good, but are just barely missing out on getting played.  In most of the local games and tournaments that I have seen, these guys don't get used.

I've seen them traded like mad, just no one has them in their deck.  Maybe that's something to look into.

Reducing a monster's power to zero until the end of turn is great.  The question is at what price.  I'm not sure these guys can cut it.  I'll give them a few tenths of a point on rating just because they are big.
