Trading Card Game Tips from fans

October 2007
Deck Fix: Cyber Dragons - Ed

As I entered the local Card Shop, I quickly signed up for the soonest local tournament I could find. I paid the entry fee and I allowed the man in charge to check my deck. I wanted to see if there were any new decks that I hadn't seen before.

Instead of a new deck, I found a Cyber Dragon deck that seemed to work extraordinarily with all those fusions and Metamorphosis's. However, with the new format, the deck was brought down a tier or two. I chose to fix up a Cyber Dragon deck today in this article because it reminded my of that day, and how the owner of that deck got attached to traditional format because of the new ban list.

Here's the email that was sent to me:

Hi, I read a coupple of the articles you've posted on Pojo.com and must say that I enjoy you insight into the game and the current state of the game. I've been working on a Cyber Dragon deck and after reading the Dark World (another deck I use) deck fix you posted, I thought perhaps you could help. I've tested this deck against several others and I suppose the mian problem is that I just don't have several of the cards I need to improve it. Well anyway...

Monsters:

Cyber Dragon x 3
Jinzo x 1
Sangan x 1
Dark Mimic lv1 x 3
Dekoichi x 3
Cyber Phoenix x 2
Magician of Faith x 1
Proto Cyber Dragon x 3

Spells:

Premature Burial x 1
SORL x 1
Power Bond x 1
Future Fusion x 1
Lightning Vortex x 1
Hammer Shot x 2
Magical Mallet x 2
Pot of Avarice x 1
Heavy Storm x 1
MST x 1
Re-Fusion x 1
Double Summon x 1
Brain Control x 1

Traps:

Call of the Haunted x 1
Torrential Tribute x 1
Dust Tornado x 2
Forced Back x 2
Magic Cylinder  x 1
Widespread Ruin x 1

Fusion:

Cyber End Dragon x 3
Cyber Twin Dragon x 1

And that's it. As you can see I don't have many of the better cards I need for this deck, but any help or advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

It seems that no matter how many times I keep on fixing up the decklists to my convenience, none of the deck fixes that are sent to me catch on to that. Anyways, I'll fix it up yet again.

Now, I don't know what everyone thought of the format of my last Deck Fix, but I'll be using the typical approach to fixing decks that I first started out making. Let's start with removing the cards that aren't needed from the monster section, shall we?

We'll first be removing cards that don't make sense in the theme. Three copies of Dark Mimic Lv 1 is definitely both too passive and not related to our theme. We'll remove those. Next are the cards that are related, but aren't needed. Three copies of Proto Cyber Dragon is a good example of this. I can understand one or two copies, but three copies is just too much. Let's remove one of those copies. Now, with 13 monsters in the deck now, we'll move on to the adjustments in the Spells section.

Again, we're removing the unrelated cards first. Magical Mallet is sort of a hardcore OTK deck card, and this deck definitely isn't that. So we'll take out both copies of it. Re-Fusion is yet another card that doesn't make sense. With only 4 Fusion Monsters on the list, it's definitely an exceptionally rare sight to see this deck summon a Fusion Monster after drawing Re-Fusion. I'll be taking this card out.

Next up are those cards that are related to the Cyber Dragon theme, but aren't needed. Power Bond is the only card that comes to mind, and I'll be removing it for the simple reason of doubling the attack of what is most likely to be a powerful fusion monster with no protection whatsoever from traps, and that you take a crapload of damage at the end of the turn.

Cody definitely has a solid trap lineup here, but there's one card that I'm not sure about, and that's Widespread Ruin. It works well in Gadget decks, now that so many removal spells were limited to one, but in a Cyber Dragon deck, the card should be replaced with something much more effective. I'll be removing the Widespread Ruin.

The additions to the monster section are next, and with 8 slots, we can make the monster lineup exceptionally solid. We'll be adding another Jinzo into this deck, because it allows the deck to move much faster and easier, especially for the conservative player. Another addition I'll be making is a very important one, the addition of Drillroid. At the last SJC, SJC Chicago, almost every deck in the top 16 ran either a searcher or a card that isn't destroyed in battle like Spirit Reaper. So, if Drillroid was added into this deck, we'd be able to plow through those cards much easier. Searchers are stopped in their tracks because Drillroid destroys them with his effect, not in battle. Another Cyber Phoenix will be added for its excellent draw power and protective effect.

Now we're moving on to the additions in the Spell section. There are only two cards that seem of importance to me when we only have 4 slots left, Megamorph and Overload Fusion. I'm going to be adding Chimeratech Overdragon into the Fusion Deck later on in this fix, and Overload Fusion would help the Overdragon's Fusion Summon tremendously. Megamorph is added for it's excellent OTK capabilities and for it's ability to clear the path of opposing monsters in tight situations.

Finally, with only 2 or maybe 3 slots left to edit the Traps section with, I'll be adding some cards that I think are essential. I'll be taking the slots up with 2 Phoenix Wing Wind Blasts and a Mirror Force. Mirror Force is a staple and it helps out in defending yourself against an opposing onslaught of monsters and clears the field for an open attack. The Phoenix Wing Wind Blasts are very helpful pieces of tech, locking your opponents hand and limiting their options. It also makes their moves a bit more predictable.

So, here's a summary of everything that I did to Cody's deck.

-        3 Dark Mimic Lv 1

-        1 Proto Cyber Dragon

-        1 Re-Fusion

-        1 Widespread Ruin

-        2 Magical Mallet

+     1 Jinzo

+     2 Drillroid

+     1 Cyber Phoenix

+     1 Megamorph

+     1 Overload Fusion

+     1 Mirror Force

+     1 Phoenix Wing Wind Blast

So, the final product will look like this:
