The Main Course Should
Always Have a Side Dish with It! (By: Master
Tricks)
Hello fellow duelists out there! I'm trying
to redeem myself for the time that was lost
since my article in February and will write more
articles about important/interesting topics to
talk about.
Now, you guys are probably wondering what
the hell the title of my article means because
seriously, I have no clue what it means either
(If you think I'm being serious about that, then
you must go see a therapist or a Japanese Doctor
to get yourself a brain scan.). If you really
don't understand the meaning of my article
title, then I'll explain it briefly. What it
means is that a main deck should always come
with a prepared sidedeck just like in a regular
dinner meal, having a main dish with a few side
dishes to enjoy. Here in the metagame, the
sidedeck is really an important concept and tool
to definitely take advantage of since Konami
offers that opportunity.
If you're facing a tough deck to beat and
whether you won or lost the first duel, always
sidedeck unless you're really sure and confident
that you're deck can handle the opposing deck
without additional modifications. It's actually
just plain common sense to have a prepared
sidedeck and should sidedeck in duels during any
type of tournament with prizes unless you're
just having fun, taking marijuana, got your
brain removed by Yoda or some other aliens, or
Peter Griffin just made you a complete idiot.
But if you want the reason why sidedecks and
sidedecking is important, I'll tell you why. It
is because that it gives you a higher
probability of you winning you're next duel
against your opponent. You want to be prepared
to face any type of deck during your duels in a
tournament so always pack various cards that is
the weakness of the types of decks you believe
you will be playing against in a tournament.
Next, I'll be giving some tips on a good
sidedeck since I was told by many other duelists
that my sidedeck are always broad and good. I
think so myself too, oddly (Beware! I might be
going frenzy and might transform into a werewolf
on the night of the full moon. If you actually
believe this, then seriously...don't talk to me)
Sidedeck Tips
How I set up a good sidedeck is that first I
think of the number of required cards to have in
a legal sidedeck, which is 15 or 0 cards. We
mostly want to stick with 15 in this case or
we'll be risking ourselves into jeopardy like
jumping off a cliff and thinking you might
survive after falling into a forest.
Next, think of 5 of the cards in the
sidedeck as cards which collaborate with the
theme/concept of the deck. For example, if you
run a Dark Armed Dragon deck, you'll most
probably put a D.D. Crow, Dark Grepher, Foolish
Burial, Dark Nepthys, Caius the Shadow Monarch,
etc. into it. You can and should put cards that
you didn't have room to put into the maindeck
into the sidedeck so you can switch out between
duels if you wish to.
Now we have 10 remaining slots to fill
up and we want cards that destroy opposing deck
strategies such as Burn, DAD decks, Six
Samurais, Monarchs, etc. The first list is about
cards which stops Burn Deck strategies:
- Prime Material Dragon - A
one-tribute 2400 ATK beatstick monster who can
negate Burn damage and transform it into healing
effects. A card that greatly poses a threat to
Burn, but I see people not paying any special
attention to it since it also has the second
effect that can negate monster destruction
effects at the price of a discard. Great monster
to also counter Gadgets since it uses a lot of
destruction spells/traps/monsters and DAD decks
- Rainbow Life - It does
basically the same first effect of what Prime
Material Dragon does, except that it is a trap
card that lasts for only a turn, requires a
discard cost, and negates effect damage only to
you and heals you instead, not opponent.
- Des Wombat - WHY DOESN'T
ANYONE PLAY THIS IN THE SIDEDECK? Come on, this
guys stops all burn damage done to you. A 1600
ATK level 3 monster who can slip by Level Limit
- Area B and Gravity Bind. Great burn-counter
card.
- Ring of Defense - Stops
major burn effects such as Magical Explosion,
Ceasefire, Magic Cylinder, etc. for not cost at
all. Great sidedeck option to counter burn.
Now, here are a list of cards that counter
Six Samurais/Warriors:
- Kinetic Soldier - Who else
than Kinetic SOldier to take care of the job?
Becomes a 3350 ATK monster that just pulverizes
all Warriors face down into the ground so hard.
Awesome sidedeck card.
- Lightning Vortex - Destroys
the swarm of monsters coming at you.
Now, as for Dark Armed Dragon decks, check
out my article called "They Don't Call me Master
Tricks For Nothing" in the tips/rants section,
posted in 2008 in April. You can find some great
ways to counter DAD decks as well as other decks
which I didn't mention in the article as well as
this one.
I apologize for such a short article, but
it's time for me to sleep and prepare for
Regionals in Charlotte, NC. If you need
anything, such as lectures, tips, advice, deck
fixes (I have so many of those that sometimes I
can't reply to all of them so those of you who
are wondering why I never responded, there is
the reason. I really don't have a whole bunch of
time with Track and school going on as well as
big tests coming up, but that's my problem, not
you duelists.), or anything else, please don't
hesitate to contact me at
pathoon@aol.com. Have fun dueling and many
thanks for reading this article! I try my
hardest to write more articles and CoTD reviews
when I have time to do so.

P.S. I don't normally do P.S.'s, but I feel this
one is necessary if you want to get to the "They
Don't Call Me Master Tricks for Nothing" article
page. Here is the hyperlink/website if it
doesn't become a hyperlink for some reason:

Thanks for reading again fellow duelists! Time
to sleep with the wolves (Please don't take my
sarcasm and jokes to seriously. I'm just teasing
and having a little fun while I can.) ;)
